Erica really like to keep track of sites that watch over stories that fact check reporting. She share Medialens as an example that examines reports.

She also shared FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting). She showed this specific article showing how video shot in Seattle of police brutality but the newsroom didn’t offer any perspective into a possible deeper problem.

Other fact checking and informative sites I like online is FactChecker.org – which looks at policy campaigns that are true or false, SPJ’s Journalism Toolbox and Journalism That Matters.

I try to stay up to date on a lot of things at the same time. Often when I stumble onto something that may be really useful, I don’t have enough time to really dig in and read it. So I use a couple of ways to save information that I find interesting.

First, if I am reading a Website that I think has good content, I save a link to Delicious. This is a site that helps you save links and add searchable tags. My full Delicious page is: http://www.delicious.com/jenleereeves
If you are curious about what I’ve read and saved about Twitter, you can go to http://www.delicious.com/jenleereeves/twitter
I have tagged things under dozens and dozens of different tags.

I also have a quick saving process in Twitter. If I see something I’d like to go back and read again later, I often favorite items. You can check out my favorites (mind you, I favorite things beyond journalism – I also tend to favorite mommy-related topics): http://www.twitter.com/jenleereeves/favorites

There are all kinds of ways to share… How do you do it?

1) Blogging is a skill that can only be learned by doing. But this blog post from BetaTales.com is a simple guideline to make sure you do it better. Your goal this semester is to blog weekly AND find ways to interact with your fellow classmates and other blogs that interest you:
5 Things journalists should learn from bloggers

2) One of my favorite online journalism leaders in higher education recently posted a list of links and information that can help you get started in WordPress. It’s a blog tool that can easily turn a blog into a fully functioning website. This class site is built in WordPress and hosted on my owner personally-owned server. (That means I use wordpress.orgbut you can also use WordPress for free by going to wordpress.com) Check out Mindy McAdams and her knowledge to feel comfortable with this tool:
Getting Started with WordPress

3) Interested in more blogging know-how? You could consider attending the ShowMe the Blog conference in St. Louis on October 23.
4) Maybe you’re really interested in ethics and the future of innovation. Kent State is holding a Next Ethics conference on September 16.

5) Did you hear about Facebook Places? It launched last week on the iPhone Facebook application. It lets you share where you and anyone who is a Facebook friend can see. It’s very similar to location-based games like Foursquare and Gowalla. There’s a lot of concern about privacy – especially since people can check in themselves and any other Facebook friend they happen to be hanging out with. Suddenly, you can have a geo-location without asking. (Gawker recommends you turn that option off.) Here’s what my phone looked like while I was checked into a Cardinal’s game over the weekend.

I was actually able to click on that line of faces to see all of the people who were okay with being identified as in the stadium on Facebook – suddenly you are made aware of people on Facebook who you don’t know personally:

I haven’t posted a blog yet on my nerd blog about my thoughts and the implications of a tool like this on Facebook… but I have thought a bit about Foursquare and Gowalla. (You don’t have to read, but if you’re curious, enjoy.) If you like the business side of it all, PC World is pondering over the implications.

6) A recent grad school graduation from the Missouri School of Journalism had her project published into a magazine format on Current.org. Read how Tara Cavanaugh spoke with many different public radio newsrooms to see how they’re harnessing social media. She had an article and a sidebar:
Social media: It’s how people know you, how they come to listen
The Facebook and Twitter toolbox

7) Are you curious how some stuff goes viral? The one that’s caught my eye the most this summer is Antoine Dodson – who was interviewed after a terrible attempted crime on his sister. His interview was turned into a YouTube song followed by t-shirts, an iTunes extended version and now he even has his own site. TechCrunch interviewed a person who really knows viral video and gave tips:
Five Rules for how to Make Things Go Viral

We had an awesome discussion about Google Buzz in class… The one thing that caught a lot of attention in the room was the discussion on what happened to a blogger on a site called Fugitivus. A blog on The Telegraph explains it pretty well in this article. I would link to the blog, but she has taken it private after many bloggers, Twitter users, Facebookers and Buzz conversations focused on her complaints. It seems Google heard it and made changes. Elle Moxley also pointed us all to this link and this link.

I asked folks out in Buzz and Twitter what they thought about Buzz and here are some of the thoughts and tips:

Steve Cusumano – “The mobile map tool seems really useful. Reporters scattered throughout the city “buzz in” news in realtime (either to their own branded buzz account or one official “news station” account”) from their mobile devices, and it puts a pin in a map for viewers showing where that news is coming from. This could work for traffic, too, especially in the fall for Mizzou football games. Since there’s also a way to quickly scan local buzzes, that could lead to story ideas and sources.
There’s ways in Twitter and Facebook to share and seach for hyperlocal content, but as of yet they don’t have it built into their system, I believe…generally have to go through someone else’s app for it post your location along with your tweet/facebook status/photo, or use an app to comb locally generated content. For all the things Buzz doesn’t do right (and I’m still leary of it for these reasons), the mobile map function is outstanding.”

David Cohn (He’s the guy who launched Spot.Us – the site we talked about in class) - ”I would tell them (if it’s not too late) that they need to learn how to play in this space because it’s not going to reverse.
If they were hesitant about Twitter – that’s fine.
But between this AND twitter- they have to recognize that there is a new type of social interaction and communication taking place.
They gotta learn the vocabulary.”

Craig Kanalley (who recently started working for the Huffington Post) responded to Dave’s post with: “That’s a huge point: between this AND twitter- they have to recognize that there is a new type of social interaction and communication taking place.”

Twitter user and Columbia, MO Realtor Scott Wendling (CommercialScott on Twitter) gave his thoughts in two 140 character posts: “I’m no journo but see lots of potential. I anticipate Google has plan to weave all apps together moving towards their OS #Buzz isnt comp. Twitter/Facebook. It’s more of an add on to email. Sometimes you just need to go private 2 public quickly.”

You can read all kinds of articles on Buzz… But I would take Dave’s advice and check it out. Learn how it works. As I said in class, it’s good to understand how all of these social spaces work. Get into Buzz enough to be able to tell a potential employer how Buzz works and how it differs from other social media tools that are mainstream. (Like Facebook and Twitter)

I’d also strongly recommend checking out the #jenclass hashtag. There were awesome backchannel discussion (other than a spinoff discussion about a plaid shirt) about Michele McClellan’s work at the Reynolds Journalism Institute.
